Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hill / Paradise Lost 2: Revelations
1-19-10
One of the most upsetting films I have ever seen...period. The fact that this sort of thing can and probably continues to happen in our supposedly modern era is painfully disturbing. I think documentaries like this are important as they seem to be the counter point to the constant barrage of propaganda fed to the public on a nightly basis. The generic procedural crime drama that depicts the righteous investigator finding the evil bad guys. As far as documentaries go I don't think you can get much better than these two films. Part one manages to be a bit more objective and almost journalistic in its approach to the subject. There doesn't need to be a slant it seems to point out the obvious. Clearly by the time the filmmakers got to part two they decided to take sides. I don't fault them for this. I feel its a mistake to think that a documentary filmmaker can be completely objective. Though I don't want a slanted propaganda piece. I do feel (like any other type of film) documentaries are a means for a voice to be herd. In the case of the Paradise Lost films that voice seems to be the voice of these clearly persecuted young men.
