In nearly every since of the phrase Avatar is an exercise in "style over substance". The problem being the style really isn't all that great nor is it entirely original. "Technology over substance" though is arguably a more actuate phrase to describe this film. During the films two hour plus run-time I marveled at the technical application of computer graphics on display. It all looks really good...but who gives a shit? I didn't pay money for a tech demo. In a real way I sorta feel like thats what I got. The plot is filled with carbon copied sentiments that are passed off as depth and meaning. The only drama to speak of is derived from the protagonists struggle to stay inside the computer animated blue cat alien thing. Its a struggle we can identify with as when he's not in his cat alien body we aren't getting the eye candy. Eye candy being the only thing this flick has to bring to the table.
